Bird enthusiast is quite crafty

February 20, 2011

“You know, the robins have been to our house for over a month already,” Barefoot exclaimed.

Barefoot has spent the better part of the winter crafting birdhouses, particularly ones to attract bluebirds. With a basement workshop at his north Davidson home, he’s been busy churning out bird sanctuaries on these cold winter days. He’s built well over 30 this season.

“It’s a hobby I enjoy,” he said. “I like to stay busy.” He shares his houses with anybody who wants one, too. He donated nearly all those houses to the Midway General Store two weeks ago.

The Squirrel Buster Plus… It Works.

December 1, 2009

Birdwatchers across the United States have a universal problem…. Squirrels! For the backyard birdwatcher squirrels can be a major nuisance. Not only do squirrels discourage our favorite birds from visiting, they consume massive quantities of bird seed and destroy our bird feeders in the process. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a personal vendetta against squirrels, they are actually kind of cute, but I’m not a “squirrel watcher”, I’m a bird watcher!

We are all well aware of the various tactics we can use to help keep the squirrels from eating all of our bird seed… baffles, bird feeder placement, etc. These tactics can help, but they really do not seem to do the trick. So after some research and scouring through many product reviews we finally have a solution… the squirrel buster plus. We have found this feeder to be worth its weight in gold.

Why you ask? The Squirrel Buster Plus is actually squirrel proof! Openings in the bottom section of the feeder (shroud) align with seed ports, providing birds access to the seed. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight automatically forces the shroud down, closing the seed ports. When the seed ports close both squirrels and large birds cannot access the seed. Additionally squirrels are not going to chew through this sturdy feeder because it is made of ABS and Polycarbonate resins and powder-coated aluminum components.

Some other positive features of the Squirrel Buster Plus include the adjustable posi-grip perch, seed tube ventilation, and the cardinal ring system. The adjustable posi-grip perch has a textured and thick perches you can shorten or extend based on the type of bird you are looking to attract. The seed tube ventilation system allows heat to escape at the top of the bird feeder through water-proof vents, while fresh air enters at the bottom of the feeder through the seed ports. This ventilation aids in keeping the bird seed fresh.

Finally the cardinal ring system… Cardinals have short necks and prefer to face their food source directly because it is awkward for them to turn their shorter necks to feed. The cardinal ring system is an optional attachment ring that comes with the feeder to allow cardinals to feed comfortably.

The Squirrel Buster Plus is 22 inches high by 6.5 inches in diameter. You can use a variety of bird seed such as cracked corn, mixed seed, peanut bits, safflower seed, sunflower kernels and sunflower seed. The feeder can be hung from trees or hooks and has a three quart seed capacity.

By the way, its dishwasher safe!

Happy birding!
