Feel like seeing red? Plant a Weigela bush

Two or three years ago, our spring bulb bed needed an added attraction. So, we found the answer at Dawes Arboretum’s plant sale — a flowering Weigela bush.

Happily flourishing in the small bed — which also has daffodils, tulips, creeping phlox, Asiatic lilies, a weeping cherry tree, several bird feeders and a bird bath — the shrub did well in the protected ell on the east of the house. This year, however, the leaves were slow to appear and I was concerned.
