Killers in your back garden

THERE are a number of problems with gardening for birds and two that are often very emotive are cats and sparrowhawks.

The overall message of the BTO leaflet is that sparrowhawks do not adversely affect the overall numbers of small birds and this is the result of extensive detailed studies.

However, it recognises the problems in gardens and makes several recommendations. These include positioning bird feeders and tables close to dense cover so that birds can find shelter immediately if danger threatens. Another way is to move the feeders and tables around the garden so the sparrowhawk cannot use the same flight path time after time.
