Attractive male birds make better foragers

Attractive male birds are better at foraging for food than their duller counterparts, meaning their cognitive abilities, and not only their looks, could be the reason that females take them as mates.

The researchers reported that the most resourceful male siskins were also those with the brightest ornamentation in Biology Letters, a publication by Britain’s Royal Society.

In the experiment, 29 male siskins had access to an elevated feeder containing pine seeds that were blocked by toothpicks crisscrossed from side to side through holes in the bird feeder. To reach the seeds, the birds had to remove one or two of the toothpicks.
