Although there’s a chance of snow hitting the region Friday, spring has arrived and with it comes the annual problem of bears destroying bird feeders.
New Hampshire Fish & Game says April 1 is a good time to remove bird feeders because bears are starting to forage to replenish fat reserves depleted during the winter denning period. Natural foods are scarce this time of year.
The state’s recommendation is made not only to prevent damage to bird feeders but to help bears. Once they get in the habit of searching for food near residences, they can become “nuisance” animals that cause damage and, in extreme cases, have to be killed.
