Holmes 4th-graders help 1st-graders build bird feeders

Fourth-graders in Sandra Smits’ class had an assignment: figure out the best way to put together simple bird feeders, then write instructions to tell others how to do it. The last part of the assignment was to read these instructions to a first-grader and seeing how readily they understand.

The bird feeders consisted of two planks of wood, three wooden rods, a laundry detergent cap and a handful of dowels. Goodin said they were designed by her husband to be built without the use of tools — other than a little bit of sanding.
