Pennsylvania Claws, Wings & Things: Q&As on nature

Q: We have been seeing an opossum in our yard during the daylight hours in the past few days. (That was before the recent period of warmer temperatures.) It is waddling over ice and snow, through vegetation, and eating things like grapes and crackers under our bird feeders. Is this behavior acceptable? We have always considered the opossum nocturnal. CM, of suburban Harrisburg.

A: Opossums are normally active from dusk to dawn, but they regularly become active during daylight hours in the winter.
