Bird count goes on as snow flies

Only four people volunteered to brave the weather Saturday for the 14th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count event at the Montezuma Audubon Center, but the amateur ornithologists discovered that birds of a feather really do flock together.

“I can see 44 mourning doves!” Kelsey Pitt exclaimed as she and friend Claire Fonda peered through binoculars at several bird feeders strategically placed behind the nature center.

The young girls spent the day acting as what the National Audubon Society calls “citizen scientists,” collecting data on various species and then reporting their findings to the organization.
