Heavy snow cover brings unusual guests to feeders

Bird feeders have been busy. Nothing like another snowstorm to get the customers in an eating mood. When this happens, the chances of getting an unexpected visitor increase.

One uncommon species one should be alert for is the white-winged crossbill. Crossbills are subject to periodic winter invasions from their boreal homes. They’re not usually prime candidates to visit feeders, because of their ability to extract seeds from the cones of various evergreens, and this hasn’t been an invasion year, at least not yet.
