Birds won’t use feeders and baths if they don’t feel safe

A question was posted on Longmont Times-Call:

Hi Johnnie: I have a mystery for you to solve.

My backyard bird feeder is usually a very busy place just before and after a winter storm. The heated birdbath draws small visitors, especially when the mercury plummets. Now it has been five days since I’ve seen a single small bird in my yard or around town.

I’ve seen crows and blackbirds, geese and robins, but not a single sparrow, goldfinch, house finch, chickadee or junco since the snow started to fall last Thursday. Is something going on with our small birds, or have they just found a better place to party? — Missing My Peeps
