Struggles over prey a common theme

The first week of 2011 was quiet but birders were out observing the activities of the birds that stay around in the winter months.

A successful Christmas count, the 30th Dunrobin-Breckenridge one, was held on Jan. 2. Bruce Di Labio reported 57 species seen, above the average of 51.

Bird feeders are active now and provide food for the winter birds, interesting observations for their owners and great entertainment. The basic food for almost all the resident and visiting birds consists of seeds, and suet or fat mixes. Black oil seed is the preferred sunflower seed and the most nutritious.
