For the birds: Winter care for the critters

Winter is an especially crucial time for birds, says Steven Saffier, at home coordinator for Audubon Pennsylvania. These winter “residents” include the dark-eyed junco and white-throated sparrow. And of course you’ll find cardinals, woodpeckers, mourning doves and many other varieties of birds in your backyard.

Winter, says Saffier, is an ideal time to feed birds because resources are scarce, and when there is snow on the ground, “birds flock to bird feeders.”
